Behavior Support Team - $1,000 for time spent in team meetings and writing referrals

School communities can enhance their effectiveness by identifying factors that result in violence and other problem behaviors. In-building, collaborative problem-solving teams are viewed as essential to successful prevention and intervention with aggressive behavior. Glen View School utilizes a behavior support team to help address issues of problem behavior. These problem-solving efforts bring together school staff, parents, and when appropriate, involved community-based agencies and the pupil. The goal is to help identify, clarify, analyze and resolve issues concerning pupil, educational and familial concerns. The behavior support team is flexible enough to address individual problems and school-wide matters. Services are provided at Glen View elementary by school staff.

GLEN Project - $300 for facilities use and $2000 in time spent on committee

The mission of the GLEN Project is to improve the physical and behavioral health and academic success of children and youth by advancing comprehensive services in schools, and to impact the neighborhood so that it is a safe and nurturing place for our children to thrive. We envision a day when all children and youth are safe, healthy, and achieving at their full potential. This Advisory group meets monthly to explore ways to secure mental health and community services for Glen View Elementary School. The current project is focused around bringing a Site Based Health Center on to our campus. Services are delivered at Glen View school by school staff.

Student Success Team - $12,000 for time spent in team meetings and writing referrals

The purpose of the Study Success Team is to design a support system for students having difficulty in the regular classroom. The SST is a group formed within the school to further examine a student’s academic, behavioral and social-emotional progress. The SST team can propose interventions for the student. The team usually consists of a teacher, administrator, and support personnel from the school. Sometimes a special education teacher will also participate to give his or her perspective. The student and parent are also a part of the team. The SST meeting provides everyone with an opportunity to share concerns and develop a plan. Either a staff member or parent can make a referral. The interventions agreed upon will vary depending on the child’s educational needs. If a child is struggling in school, the SST team tries to determine if it is due to a specific learning disability or another cause such as impaired vision, social problems, health issues, language barriers, or if other issues are affecting the child’s performance. If the SST team determines that the child could have a specific learning disability, they may recommend a formal special education evaluation. The student study team may also decide to refer a child for a Section 504 evaluation. Here, the child can also receive modifications. A 504 plan is typically used for a child who has a medical condition and requires accommodations in order to achieve academic success. Services are delivered at all GUSD Schools and performed by school staff.

Project Cornerstone - $400 for time spent in student meetings and activities

Various school activities include: Anti-bullying education, teacher team building, parent and yard duty training, Expect Respect Training for 4th/5th grade school leaders. In the Expect Respect Training, students from 4th and 5th grades are selected to serve as “school ambassadors” of peace and conflict resolution. They meet regularly with two teacher leaders to plan activities that promote peace and empathy across the campus. Services are delivered at Glen View by project Cornerstone staff and school staff.

Love & Logic - $1200 for materials; $900.00 for trainer

Staff Training Program – Staff at Glen View Elementary School receive monthly training on the Love and Logic approach to discipline. Meetings are held during staff meetings and led by the principal. The Love and Logic approach with a flexible menu of skills in our approach, and common sense at work, adults using Love and Logic skills may come across quite differently at times. Nevertheless, the “Love and Logic” approach should always look like the following:
  • A loving attitude toward the young person. A key principle of the Love and Logic approach is that we preserve the dignity - of the child AND the adult. Does yelling and threatening preserve kids’ dignity? How about ours?
  • Shared thinking and control. Adults using Love and Logic techniques resist the urge to come up with all the answers and solve all the problems. Instead, they give kids the gift of thinking about and solving problems. They ask lots of questions and give lots of choices so kids stay in on the action.
  • Empathy before consequences and bad news. We are sad for kids and we hurt for them when they struggle. Our sadness (instead of our anger and frustration) helps them own problems and learn from the consequences. None of this works without empathy.
  • Relationships are paramount. If we are not preserving or enhancing relationships, we are not really using Love and Logic techniques.
